Clarification for 2 Nephi 25:23: The Scriptures Prove We’re Saved through Christ Alone, Not Through Him Plus “All We Can Do”

Elder Dieter F. Uchtdorf: “Salvation cannot be bought with the currency of obedience; it is purchased by the blood of the Son of God” (The Gift of Grace, April 2015).

MORONI 10:32-33: Yea come unto Christ, and be perfected in him (1), and deny yourselves of all ungodliness; and if ye shall deny yourselves of all ungodliness, and love God with all your might, mind and strength, then is his grace sufficient for you (2), that by his grace (3) ye may be perfect in Christ (4); and if by the grace of God (5) ye are perfect in Christ (6), ye can in nowise deny the power of God (7). And again, if ye by the grace of God (8) are perfect in Christ (9), and deny not his power (10), then are ye sanctified in Christ (11) by the grace of God (12), through the shedding of the blood of Christ (13), which is in the covenant of the Father unto the remission of your sins, that ye become holy, without spot.” (It’s said 13 TIMES here – salvation comes ONLY through the grace of Jesus Christ. All we do is turn from all ungodliness and love Him with everything in us.)

JOHN 15:5: “I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing.

ETHER 4:12: “And whatsoever thing persuadeth men to do good is of me; for good cometh of none save it be of me. I am the same that leadeth men to all good.”

MORONI 7:24: “All things which are good cometh of Christ; otherwise men were fallen, and there could no good thing come unto them.”

MORONI 10:25: “For if there be one among you that doeth good, he shall work by the power and gifts of God.”

EPHESIANS 2:8-9: “For by grace are ye saved through faith, and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God; Not of works, lest any man should boast.”

GALATIANS 2:21: “For I through the law am dead to the law, that I might live unto God. I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me. I do not frustrate the grace of God: for if righteousness come by the law, then Christ is dead in vain.”

2 NEPHI 4:34: “O Lord, I have trusted in thee, and I will trust in thee forever. I will not put my trust in the arm of flesh; for I know that cursed is he that putteth his trust in the arm of flesh. Yea, cursed is he that putteth his trust in man or maketh flesh his arm.”

2 NEPHI 25:20: “As the Lord God liveth, there is none other name given under heaven save it be this Jesus Christ, of which I have spoken, whereby man can be saved.

2 NEPHI 25:25-29: “Wherefore the law hath become dead unto us, and we are made alive in Christ because of our faith….Wherefore, we speak concerning the law that our children may know the deadness of the law; and they, by knowing the deadness of the law, may look forward unto that life which is in Christ, and know for what end the law was given….And now behold, I say unto you that the right way is to believe in Christ, and deny him not; and Christ is the Holy One of Israel; wherefore ye must bow down before him, and worship him with all your might, mind, and strength, and your whole soul; and if ye do this ye shall in nowise be cast out.”

2 NEPHI 31:19: “For ye have not come thus far save it were by the word of Christ with unshaken faith in him, relying wholly upon the merits of him who is mighty to save.”

ENOS 1:4-8: “And my soul hungered, and I kneeled down before my Maker, and I cried unto him in mighty prayer and supplication for mine own soul; and all the day long did I cry unto him…And there came a voice unto me, saying: Enos, thy sins are forgiven thee, and thou shalt be blessed. And I, Enos, knew that God could not lie; wherefore, my guilt was swept away. And I said: Lord, how is it done. And he said unto me: Because of thy faith in Christ, whom thou hast never before heard nor seen….wherefore, go to, thy faith hath made thee whole.

MOSIAH 2:21-25: “I say, if ye should serve him with all your whole souls yet ye would be unprofitable servantsye are still indebted unto him, and are, and will be, forever and ever; therefore, of what have ye to boast? And now I ask, can ye say aught of yourselves? I answer you, Nay. Ye cannot say that ye are even as much as the dust of the earth.”

MOSIAH 16:13: “And now, ought ye not to tremble and repent of your sins, and remember that only in and through Christ ye can be saved?”

ALMA 26:12: “Yea, I know that I am nothing; as to my strength I am weak; therefore I will not boast of myself, but I will boast of my God, for in his strength I can do all things.”

ALMA 38:9: “There is no other way or means whereby man can be saved, only in and through Christ.”

MORONI 6:4: “…relying alone upon the merits of Christ, who was the author and the finisher of their faith.” (I love that He’s the author of our faith, not just the finisher who makes up the difference after we’ve partially saved ourselves through our works.)

MOSES 7:59: “Thou hast made me, and given unto me a right to thy throne, and not of myself, but through thine own grace.”

D&C 76:69: “These are they who are just men made perfect through Jesus the mediator of the new covenant, who wrought out this perfect atonement through the shedding of his own blood.”

ROMANS 3:23: “For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God; Being justified freely (JST translates it ONLY) by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus.”

1 NEPHI 17:41: “He sent fiery flying serpents among them; and after they were bitten he prepared a way that they might be healed; and the labor which they had to perform was to look; and because of the simpleness of the way, or the easiness of it, there were many who perished.”

2 NEPHI 10:24: “Wherefore, my beloved brethren, reconcile yourselves to the will of God, and not to the will of the devil and the flesh; and remember, after ye are reconciled unto God, that it is only in and through the grace of God that ye are saved.” (To reconcile just means to turn back to or to bring together, not to do part of the saving ourselves through our works.)

ALMA 24:11: “And now behold, my brethren, since it has been all that we could do (as we were the most lost of all mankind) to repent of all our sins and the many murders which we have committed, and to get God to take them away from our hearts, for it was all we could do to repent sufficiently before God that he would take away our stain.” (A beautiful clarification of the “all we can do” in 2 Ne. 25:23: all we can do is repent or turn back to God.)

ALMA 42:13: “Therefore, according to justice, the plan of redemption could not be brought about, only on conditions of repentance [not through qualifying by our works].”

HEBREWS 13:20-21: “Now the God of peace . . . [m]ake you perfect in every good work to do his will, working in you that which is wellpleasing in his sight, through Jesus Christ; to whom be glory for ever and ever.”

PHILIPPIANS 2:13: “For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure.”

WORDS OF MORMON 1:7: “[W]herefore, [the Lord] worketh in me to do according to his will.”

ISAIAH 26:12: “Lord, thou wilt ordain peace for us: for thou also hast wrought all our works in us.

Hymn #111, Rock of Ages, Verse 2: “Not the labors of my hands, can fill all thy law’s demands. Could my zeal no respite know, could my tears forever flow, All for sin could not atone. Thou must save, and thou alone.”
